I.M. Systems Group, Inc. (IMSG), (http://www.imsg.com), a Federal Government Contractor, is seeking to fill a position for a Research Scientist to work at NOAA's Environmental Modeling Center (EMC) of the National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP) located in Camp Springs, MD. The successful candidate will support the EMC in transitioning research and development work related to ensemble and probabilistic forecasting into operational use. Depending on requirements, the candidate will work on global ensemble initialization to improve the performance of global ensemble forecast. The work will expect to cover future hybrid ensemble initial perturbations from current ETR (ensemble transform with rescaling) and future NCEP EnKF analysis. The work will involve the construction and testing of operationally suitable techniques for the processing of ensemble forecasts, including verification. In carrying out her/his work, the candidate will work closely to EMC hybrid data assimilation group, interact with a group of scientists at EMC working on forecast model, as well as collaborate with developers and users of ensemble and probabilistic forecasts within and outside NCEP as appropriate.
Qualifications:
Required Skills:
•Candidates must have experience in numerical modeling, probabilistic forecasting in particular.
•Must have experience and interest in two or more of the following areas of ensemble techniques: Ensemble initialization; Representing uncertainties associated with initial conditions generated by numerical data assimilation techniques; EnKF/ETKF assimilation; Assessing and representing model related forecast uncertainties; Probabilistic verification.
•Must also have experience with running complex jobs, and processing large amounts of numerical output data on mainframe supercomputers and/or workstations in a FORTRAN/UNIX environment, using advanced statistical and display tools.
•Position requires a Ph.D. or M.S. (with 8 years of relevant experience) in Atmospheric Science, or a related physical or applied mathematical science.
Desired Skills:
•Candidates who are able to work well in a team environment, and those with good written and oral communication skills will have an advantage.
•Candidates with experience in NCEP’s systems, especially the global ensemble system, will also have an advantage.
